Art Background

One might say art is in my blood. My mom was an amazing artist, as is my brother. I have many fond childhood memories of my mom, brother and me taking art lessons - and of my 8 year old brother and the 10 year old me having our work on display during a town event. Most of my work was in oil, with some pastel.

I gave up painting after high school and did not return for over 35 years, until my daughter encouraged me to start taking lessons at the local Honolulu Museum of Art. I continued painting and taking lessons until 2020, mostly in oil. I love the smell, the texture, the feel of oil, and how well it blends on canvas. In the years when I took classes at HMA I also created art using charcoal, water color, acrylic and other media - but I always returned to oils. Then, COVID-19 hit and the art classes and studios closed. That made painting with oils more prohibitive as turpentine and other solvents need to be safely disposed of - not down the drain. What is an artist to do? I made the move to acrylics, CrayPas, pen, pencil and other media. It opened a whole new, exciting world for me. I discovered a love for acrylics. I have also returned to oils. My first new piece, A Light in The Forest, is a mixed media piece featuring an acrylic background and oil overpainting. Watch this site for more oil, acrylic, and mixed media to come! I have so many ideas.
